Homestead Exemption in Florida provides a number of benefits for owners of permanent residences. The two most important are protection of the owner's interest in the property from creditors, and exemption from taxation. For owner-occupants who make the property their permanent residence, the Florida Constitution reduces the taxable value of the residence by up to $50,000. Additional exemptions are available for senior citizens, widows/widowers, and the disabled.
You must apply for Homestead Exemption in the county where your property is located. Once approved, you do not have to apply again.
